The Umayyad Caliphate was founded in 41 A.H. (661 A.D.) with Damascus (Syria) as capital. From 77 A.H. (699 A.D.), it established a monetary reform that would become the norm for centuries to come.

The Umayyads have started invading Spain (Al-Andalus) in 92 A.H. / 711 A.D. which was completely conquered by 114 A.H. / 732 A.D. and Al-Andalus, as a province of the caliphate, was ruled by governors. After the collapse of the Umayyads caliphate (replaced by the Abbasid caliphate) in 132 A.H. / 750 A.D., the province of Al-Andalus seceded in 138 A.H. / 756 A.D. to become an independent emirate. The caliphate of Al-Andalus was then proclaimed in 316 A.H. / 928 A.D. and its collapse started circa 399 A.H. / 1009 A.D. during the revolution of Cordoba.
