The Marinids belonged to the Zenata confederation and occupied a territory extending between Figuig and Sijilmasa. As a result of various demographic changes, the Marinid tribes were compelled to move northwards, gradually and steadily expanding into the inhabited regions they had long frequented, while the Almohad regime was rapidly disintegrating. The Marinids displayed none of the reforming zeal that had characterized their Almoravid and Almohad predecessors during their conquest of Morocco. However, through their contact with jurists and urban elites, they gradually developed a sense of religious mission, seeking to provide the Muslim community with a just and prosperous government—something the Almohads were no longer capable of ensuring (EI2).
Gold coinage follows the classification of El Hadri. The denominations of the silver coins are those established by Hohertz and when an anonymous silver coin is attributed to a particular ruler, the attribution follows El Hadri.

Al-Nasir Abu Ya`qub Yusuf (685-706 A.H. / 1286-1307 A.D.)
Al-Nasir Abu Ya`qub Yusuf was the son of Abu Yusuf Ya`qub and faced numerous rebellions,
some of them instigated by members of his own family (Terrasse-2, pp. 39–40).

Abu `Inan Faris (749-759 A.H. / 1348-1358 A.D.)
The rumour that Abu'l Hasan Ali had been killed in battle in Tunisia led his son, Abu `Inan Faris, to
have himself proclaimed his successor in Morocco. Abu'l Hasan and his son fought each other until
the death of the former. Abu `Inan Faris received his father’s remains with great demonstrations of
respect and grief (Terrasse-2, pp. 60–61) and father and son now rest side by side in the necropolis of
Chellah in Rabat, beside Abu Inan’s mother, Shams al-Duha (“Morning Sun”).
Abu `Inan was the first Marinid ruler to proclaim himself Caliph (Terrasse-2, p. 63), and he
commissioned the construction of magnificent monuments and madrasas. He attracted to Fas some of
the greatest scholars of his time, including Ibn Khaldun and Ibn Battuta. It was Abu `Inan who
suggested that Ibn Battuta write an account of his travels.
His death marked the beginning of the decline of the Marinid dynasty, and the rulers who succeeded
him were either dominated –and sometimes assassinated– by their vizir (prime minister), or
were little more than pawns in power struggles, particularly those involving the Nasrids of Granada.

Abu Muhammad `Abd al-Haqq II (823-869 A.H. / 1420-1465 A.D.)
`Abd al-Haqq ibn Abi Sa`id was the last sultan of the Marinid dynasty. When he inherited the throne after his father's murder, he was only one year old, and Abu Zakariya
al-Wattasi became his regent. Once he reached adulthood, he uncessfully tried to free himself from the tutelage of the Banu Wattas family, who later founded the
Wattasid dynasty. He held the caliphal title of Commander of the Believers during the last six years of his reign (863–869 A.H. / 1459–1465 A.D.). `Abd al-Haqq ibn Abi Sa`id
was eventually killed, his throat cut in a mosque in Fas during a parody of the Feast of Sacrifice (`Id al-Adha) (García-Arenal, Liétard-3).
